Darkness in Smyrna after one-car accident
About 10,000 customers lost power after a car struck a transmission line Monday night.
On a night when it should have been twinkling with Christmas lights, much of Smyrna was dark. About 10,000 customers in Smyrna and Vinings lost power Monday night after a car struck a transmission pole at the intersection of Windy Hill Road and South Cobb Parkway (U.S. 41). Smyrna Police reported only minor injuries.
A Georgia Power technician who was awaiting instructions near a line on Spring Road confirmed that the outage extended south from the site of the accident to Interstate 285.
The accident caused power outages in many parts of Smyrna and Vinings including the downtown area and its surrounding neighborhoods.
“I had to miss my yoga class tonight at the community center,” said Jane Allen Schope, a Smyrna resident who lives on Hamby Street behind the Smyrna Public Library. “I’m taking this time to relax and enjoy the down-time of the evening.”
At 7:40 p.m. Smyrna Police released a Nixle update saying that Georgia Power reported it would take six hours to fully restore power. Smyrna Police also reported that Windy Hill Road between Cobb Parkway and Village Parkway was still closed and advised drivers to use Lake Park Drive.
A couple of hours later, police officials announced that power had been restored to most if not all local customers.
The incident is under investigation by the Smyrna S.T.E.P. Unit (Selective Traffic Enforcement Program) and speed and alcohol did not appear to be a factor according to Smyrna Police spokesperson Mike Smith.
