Did you sweat it out on National Running Day?

A estimated nearly 50 million Americans enjoy slipping on the sneakers and heading out for a run.

It’s the first Wednesday in June and in case you didn’t know, that means it’s time to celebrate with the estimated 49 million Americans who enjoy a good jog.

Yes, National Running Day is today and the endurance sports category has indeed experienced explosive growth over the past year. Half-marathons have seen a 24 percent growth rate from 2009 to 2010, while triathlons experienced a 63.7 percent growth rate.

Competitor Group, Inc. (CGI), is encouraging runners across the country to log their miles online at Competitor.com with the goal to reach 500,000 miles in one day. Runners can also share their personal stories about why they run, and today only, CGI will offer exclusive registration discounts for its popular Rock ‘n’ Roll Marathon, TriRock, and Muddy Buddy event series. See here for more info.

But how did you celebrate National Running Day? Did you run to work? Take a lunchtime trot? Did you run with a friend? Did you take to a new path you’ve never attempted before? Did you go farther or longer than you’ve ever run before?

Or maybe you donated some shoes to organizations that support youth running, like Shoes That Fit, which has helped put 800,000 pairs of sneakers on little feet.

Or maybe, since it’s so blazing hot outside, you skipped the run today. Maybe you’re on your way to Canoe’s River Bar for tonight’s Song of the South music series; or Rev Coffee’s Open Mic night. It’s "Wine Wednesday'' at Taverna Fiorentina and according to Tilted Kilt’s facebook page, the “beers are cold, and the girls are hot!!’’

And speaking of heat, you could always merely head to the pool for a nice refreshing dip. But do remember, in the pool area, no running is allowed.
