Drive In, Order Up: Food Truck Park Coming to Smyrna
Food Truck Tuesdays are in the works for Smyrna's Taylor Brawner Park.
The food trucks are coming! The food trucks are coming! Smyrna City Council voted at its meeting Monday to approve Smyrna Food Truck Tuesdays at Taylor Brawner Park. The first food truck event could be held as early as June 26, said Jennifer Bennett, Smyrna’s community relations director.
Smyrna resident Bettie Cagle is the organizer of the Virginia Highlands food truck event. She approached Bennett about starting a food truck event in Smyrna.
“The Smyrna one could easily be the best food truck location in the metro area,” Bennett said.
She said they hope to ultimately bring between seven and 12 food trucks event. Smyrna’s hometown food truck, Happy Belly Food Truck told Smyrna-Vinings Patch via Twitter that they’re excited about the prospect of a food truck park.
“We are looking forward to getting started in our backyard,” Happy Belly said in a Tweet.
Bennett said the food trucks would set up in Taylor Brawner Park near the playground each Tuesday from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m.
What's your favorite food truck? Tell us in the comments.

I forgot to mention my favorite food truck is Happy Belly of course! Supporting the local business who offers "healthy" food truck fare and donates a percentage of proceeds to charity. Can't wait to see thier new menu in July!

I'm sorry to put the kibash on this idea but I thought the whole idea of a food truck was for the food truck to come to people's places of business, e.g. an office building, to give employees another option for lunch rather than brown-bagging it or driving anywhere. It's good for the environment; it helps individuals save on gas; it gives employees more time to enjoy their lunch break, etc. The food truck pulls into the parking lot at lunch time and people WALK up to it to order. See how that works?

I thought it was so people could open restaurants with lower overhead and have the opportunity for a greater audience by going to the people.

Mobile restaurants have a MUCH smaller carbon footprint than traditional brick and mortar stores. This is true whether or not they stop in your office parking lot or another location. And, yes Amy, they generally cost substantially less to open and operate. For an excellent read - see http://www.ecocentricblog.org/2011/08/22/can-a-food-truck-be-green-in-a-word-yes/

June - I agree. Food trucks are a current fad. Does anyone have a concept of how much busine$$ seven food trucks need to generate over 3 hours to break-even? Support the local restaurants.

Can't wait! TBP is just over a mile from our house. A nice evening walk or bike ride and a chance to try a variety of foods in one location. Hopefully, some local musicians will eventually provide some entertainment.
I always find it interesting that some look for the negative in a novel business concept. Give these entrepreneurs some credit for making a go at an idea that is currently popular

I like the novelty of a food truck (as long as they have the appropriate health inspections). I imagine others do also and that's why they are so popular at festivals. But I really like the idea of supporting our local Smyrna restaurants as doing that provides stability and vibrancy to our town. Empty restaurants because the dinner crowd is hanging out in a parking lot doesn't help rejuvenate our town's economic situation nor help the entrepreneurs who have staked their claim in the brick and mortar rental in Smyrna.

This is not an either / or issue. You can do both and support the economic growth of Smyrna either way. And this is coming from someone with a significant brick and mortar investment here ;D

I completely agree with you JWB. A few would rather look at the negative side of this instead of the positive. Food trucks can bring in more people who might never have a reason to visit this area on a Tuesday evening. If you have a good "brick and mortar" business then there will be no competition because the food trucks do not have licenses to sell alcoholic beverages and there isn't sit down seating, unless you consider a park bench or a picnic table to be competition. I have personally seen this in action in Los Angeles and it drives customers into "brick and mortar" business's because after they get done eating, what do they want to do? Go home or go to a local establishment and have some beverages and listen to some music or watch a game. Just my 2 cents worth.

I am more than excited to present this in Smyrna, my city of residence! The feedback with questions and fear is perfectly natural! Who are these people and why are they coming into our neighborhoods? What kind of impact will it make?! I would like to tell you a little of what I have experienced with the Virginia Highland location. There was anxiety and skepticism when this event began last year but was passed unanimously this year for the event's return. Also, the owner of the lot we use in town owns two brick and mortar restaurants within 1000 ft. Many of the patrons of the "Food Truck Night" are walking with their families and wouldn't have been in a restaurant otherwise but enjoy the opportunity to see their neighbors, let their kids play and do something different. I expect the same type crowd here in Smyrna. We will be working with a local food truck "Happy Belly" as well as promoting small businesses throughout the metro Atlanta area. Not only that but we will be donating to the "Smyrna Education Fund" on a weekly basis, again supporting the growth of our community. I am working on a promotion now that will not only benefit the event itself but promote patronizing local brick and mortar restaurants. All I ask is to try it out and see what you think. We are an amazing small town trying new things and while it can be strange at first, I want us to keep an open mind and be open to new opportunities for fun and community building!

Very cool. I saw one with a Big Green Egg grill like the one used at Muss and Turner's. Great burgers from those things.

A bunch of us jumped in the car to check out Food Truck Park. 1850 Howell Mill Rd. It was PACKED. Couldn't find a place to park and didn't want to have to hike so we went somewhere else for dinner. I couldn't believe how many people were there. Somebody's doing something right. We'll go back.

Yep!
I said it in the other thread..that place is happening and I think we can have something similar right here!
It makes more sense to drive to Atlanta Rd. than Howell Mill.
I can't wait to see what trucks show up!

This is awesome - hopefully we'll have fresh organic salads/sandwiches. Wonderful idea to stroll the babies, walk the dogs and have a fun lunch at the fountain. THANK YOU MAX BACON FOR THIS..............we love our city and this is a great addition.
