Have you missed Campbell Road Bridge?

Smyrna bridge replacement construction nearly five months old as traffic connection between Atlanta and Spring Roads via Campbell Road remains suspended.

Smyrna city officials said it would take “approximately 180 days’’ to replace the Campbell Road Bridge, but by the looks of things and recent official estimates, it could take more time as evidenced by a quiet, rainy Tuesday at the construction site.

The bridge was closed on Aug. 1 and with it a highly used traffic connection along Campbell Road between Atlanta and Spring Roads. Oakley Downs, The Park at Oakley Downs and surrounding neighborhoods have been affected by the closure for certain.

Last week, the city said the Campbell Road Bridge project was about 65 percent complete. Today would be approximately Day 150 of the project, which was approved in the 2005 SPLOST and has involved the replacement of the existing bridge over the CSX railroad. The new bridge will accommodate sidewalks for pedestrian traffic.

All the reinforcing steel is now in place for the bridge deck, which was scheduled to be poured on this week. The water main crossing attached to underside of the bridge is now complete, with final connection to the existing water main on each side of the bridge scheduled for this week. That is if wet weather doesn’t slow things down.

At a recent council meeting, it was remarked that a late January/early February completion date was being targeted. So, how has this bridge closure affected you or your commute? Are you looking forward to the more pedestrian-friendly bridge? Please share in the comment box below.

Also nearby, construction on Spring Road continues as a new pedestrian bridge over the CSX railroad tracks is coming. The $1.4 million project comes from $667,175 federal funding and $691,793 of local funding from the 2005 SPLOST.

The 12-foot, 227-foot long pedestrian bridge will link to the Spring Road multi-use trail, which has been under construction on the east side of the bridge since spring.
