Monday: Happy Pi Day! We know some of you are celebrating big-time the ratio of a circle’s circumference to its diameter, but resist the urge to go round and round and instead head straight to the Smyrna Community Center for today’s Red Cross Blood Drive. Give the gift of life between 3 p.m. and 7 p.m. today, and then reward yourself with some free ice cream.
Chick-fil-A founder Treutt Cathy turned 90 last week and to help celebrate, the Chick-fil-A at 3100 South Cobb Drive is giving away a free Icedream Sundae to anyone who buys a meal. The offer is good from 1 p.m. to 7 p.m. We figure Cathy can afford the give-away considering the latest Forbes list of the world’s riches people had him at No. 692 with a net worth of $1.8 billion.
Tuesday: Et tu Brute? The Ides of March arrive tomorrow, but don’t feel like you have to stab a friend in the back to get ahead. CobbWorks is conducting a computer MS Word class from 6-8 p.m. at Smyrna’s Market Village. Just look for the CobbWorks bus (Career Mobile Center) in the Smyrna Library parking lot located at 100 Village Green Circle.
And if the Smyrna Community Center is your registered voting place, make it a most productive trip by casting your vote in Cobb County’s SPLOST special election. Cobb offers maps of the polling places here and you can check your voter registration status and polling place at Secretary of State Brian Kemp’s website.
Wednesday: Hey, hey, it’s Freedom Of Information Day. And let’s start by highlighting a great charitable cause being held at the Cumberland Tilted Kilt. It’s a St. Baldrick’s Day celebration at the restaurant, where beginning at 6 p.m., participants will shave their head to help raise money to fight childhood cancer. To learn more, make a donation or even volunteer, call 404-641-7904 or email email@example.com.
The spread of social media information only grows by the seconds these days, and it is no different locally. The marketing firm NetProspex.com recently ranked Atlanta 10th out of 50 U.S. cities as far as Twitter usage is concerned. It indicated about 30 percent of Atlanta businesses are using Twitter, and not surprisingly, the Smyrna-Vinings area has its fare share of folks tweeting throughout the week. Once a month they get together for a SmyrnaTweetup to meet, socialize and network. Previous meeting spots have included Rev Coffee and Twisted Taco, as Wednesday’s gathering is set to take place at U.S. Cafe at 4499 South Cobb Drive beginning at 6 p.m.
Thursday: It’s officially National Day in Ireland, and unofficially national pound down a Guinness or four across the United States with the arrival of St. Patrick’s Day. And with the NCAA Tournament tipping off at noon, you can bet spots such Meehan’s Public House and Padriac’s will be packed early and throughout the day. Coming Tuesday, we’ll have our Smyrna-Vinings Patch Picks of the best local spots to get your Irish on come Thursday.
If singing Irish songs with inebriated strangers isn’t your bag, maybe think about sitting back and watching others perform as “A Chorus Line’’ begins a four-day run at the Cobb Energy Centre. There are five performances beginning with Thursday’s 8 p.m. show and more info can be found here.
Friday: The close of the workweek brings Awkward Moments Day. Yes, it’s time to celebrate those uncomfortable times in our lives where we feel regretful, embarrassed or just plain awkward. We say revel in these cringe-inducing moments with gusto. Or maybe even create one. It’s just $6 admission for Sparkles Disco Skate Night, and nothing says awkward like a middle-aged editor trying to look cool on roller skates on a Friday night.
