Package Store Owners Frustrated by Sunday Sales Revote

Sunday sales will appear again on the July 31 ballot.

A Paulding County judge has made it official: All of Cobb County will vote again on Sunday package sales of alcohol July 31. This has some Cobb County package store owners frustrated.

Superior Court Judge Arthur Fudger signed a consent order Monday between the county and plaintiffs who challenged the March 6 referendum in which , The Marietta Daily Journal reported. The order was filed with the  clerk's office Tuesday.

The revote will take place July 31. If Cobb voters again say yes, Sunday sales will start in unincorporated areas Aug. 12, 10 weeks after the June 3 beginning planned under the original referendum.

Smyrna-Vinings Patch spoke to Kris McTaggart, owner of in Vinings, . She said she was looking forward to the passage of Sunday sales so that she could be sell alcohol to nearby apartment residents spending their summers at the pool. Now that the measure is being put on the ballot again she won’t be able to sell alcohol till the end of the summer.

“It’s definitely going to hurt our business for us to be closed on Sundays through the middle of August,” she said. “And it’s going to hurt the county as far as their sales tax revenue as well. This is a huge setback for us.”

Chance Nayee, owner of , said his business is impacted not only because he can’t sell alcohol on Sunday. His Saturday sales are down between five and eight percent.

“Everyone around us within a mile of us is open,” he said. “We’ve seen a drop-off of wine sales and I think this is because grocery stores. A lot of people do their grocery shopping on Sunday and probably pick up the wines there.”

In the meantime, Nayee’s looking on the bright side.

“It’s a few more Sundays off,” he said.
