UPDATE: Smyrna Officer Involved in Shooting Austell Suspect
A suspect was shot by a Smyrna police officer Tuesday during a traffic stop that resulted in a car chase and collisions involving multiple vehicles, according to authorities.
Update, 11:45 a.m. Wednesday
The suspect in Tuesday's incident has been identified as 24-year-old Kevin Shymel Gibbs of Austell. Gibbs attempted to run down a Smyrna police officer and was shot, said Smyrna police spokesman Michael Smith.
Gibbs is charged with aggravated assault and two felony charges including the intent to murder and obstruction.
He is expected to be released from the hospital later today.

The Smyrna Police Department is investigating an officer involved shooting from Tuesday afternoon.
Authorities said a suspect was shot by a Smyrna police officer during a traffic stop of a suspicious vehicle that resulted in a car chase and collisions involving multiple vehicles.
The initial incident happened at approximately 5 p.m. on Park Road just north of Jonquil Park. The vehicle pursuit ended with a collision involving the vehicles of the suspect and the officer as well as several civilians' at the intersection of Spring Road and Glenroy Drive, said Smyrna police spokesman Michael Smith.
The suspect was transported to the hospital, and is in stable condition. The officer was not injured, Smith said.
An investigation is ongoing, and the names of the officer and the suspect have not been released.
Smith said the officer will be placed on administrative leave pending the conclusion of an internal investigation as a routine in any officer involved shooting.
