Smyrna Police Officer Terminated After Pot Arrest

Smyrna's Clyde Cook reportedly had marijuana in his groin area during a search at a traffic stop in Woodstock.

A Smyrna police officer was dismissed from the department on Friday after being arrested Thursday night on charges of felony possession of marijuana and possession of a weapon during the commission of a crime.

According to reports, Clyde Cook, 55, was stopped on Canton Road in Woodstock by a MCS Cobra Unit from the Cobb County Sheriff’s Office at approximately 8:35 p.m. During the course of the traffic stop, MCS agents detected an odor of marijuana coming from the vehicle, and after a search, found narcotics belonging to another person in the vehicle.

A subsequent search reportedly revealed an undisclosed amount of marijuana in Cook’s groin area. Members of the Smyrna Police Department’s Internal Affairs Office and Criminal Investigative Division then arrived on the scene to conduct an internal investigation.

The conclusion of that investigation was that Cook, a Smyrna resident, had violated the department’s Stand of Conduct and Code of Ethics and as a result, Smyrna Police Chief Stanley E. Hook terminated Cook. Hook was not available for comment on Friday.

Cook was temporarily held at the Cobb County Adult Detention Center before being released after posting bond.
