The candidates, incumbents and issues that will be facing Smyrna-Vinings, Cobb County and metro Atlanta.

As we look ahead to November’s elections, Smyrna-Vinings Patch is devoted to bring you the information you need about every race in town. Here's our start on the candidates and issues we'll be covering as November draws near. Bookmark this page for updates.

Transportation Investment Act: Voters from the 10-county metro Atlanta region decide whether to impose a one-percent transportation special-purpose local-option sales tax for the next 10 years that will fund a list of 157 transportation improvement projects. The tax is a hot topic in Smyrna-Vinings as well as throughout metro Atlanta.

District 11 U.S. House of Representative: Congressman Phil Gingrey (R) faces a redrawn district full of new constituents and three challengers to his seat as Georgia's District 11 Representative. Republicans William Llop and Michael Opitz and Democrat Patrick Thompson qualified against him in May.

District 6 State Senate Seat: State Sen. Doug Stoner (D-Smyrna) has a tough battle ahead to keep his seat in District 6. The redrawn district now includes more Republican territory, Sandy Springs and Buckhead, in addition to Smyrna-Vinings. In May three Republicans qualified to run against him: Hunter Hill, Josh Belinfante and Drew Ellenburg.

Cobb County Commission Chairman: Incumbent County Commission Chairman Tim Lee has three challengers after his seat: Mike Boyce, Bill Byrne and Larry Savage.

House Resolution 1162: Voters will decide if the state can override local school board's decisions on the rejection of charter schools.

I would like to see interviews with each of the candidates for all positions retained online and available for review until the election.

The Transportation Investment Act, also known as the Regional Transportation Referendum, is critical for the city of Atlanta. We need more mobility options in the city as well as improvements to bottlenecks in the area such as at spaghetti junction. The passage of this referendum will allow Atlanta to being to improve its transportation system to fit the needs of its residents.
