Survey Says Georgia One of Most Religious States

There's a reason it's called the Bible Belt. Eight of the top 10 most religious states were in the South.

Georgia was ranked as one of the nation’s most religious states, according to a recent Gallup survey.

Huffington Post reported that Georgia was the ninth most religious state in the country with 48 percent of its residents surveyed considering themselves “very religious,” meaning religion was an important part of their daily lives and they attend religious services every week or almost every week.

Georgia scored eight points higher than the national average. According to the Gallup survey, 40 percent of Americans surveyed consider themselves very religious while 32 percent said they weren’t religious, meaning religion is not a part of their daily lives and they rarely if ever attend religious services. The moderately religious—those who say religion is important to them but don’t attend services or those who don’t think religion is important, but do attend services—accounted for 28 percent of those surveyed.

The survey indicated that there’s a reason the South is called the Bible Belt. Seven of the eight states that ranked higher than Georgia are in the Southeastern United States. Utah, which ranked second, was the only exception. A search of churches in the Smyrna-Vinings Patch Directory turns up eight pages of results.

The survey named Mississippi the most religious state with 59 percent saying they were very religious. The least religious states were Vermont and New Hampshire where only 23 percent of residents surveyed said they were very religious.
