UPDATE: Mableton Teen Allegedly Starved by Mother Was Mentally Challenged
Police arrested Ebony Berry, 38, of Mableton Friday after they found the body of her severely malnourished teenage daughter at their home on Concord Road.
The 16-year-old Mableton girl that police say was starved to death by her mother was mentally challenged, reported the Atlanta Journal Constitution.
Ebony Berry was arrested Friday and charged with murder and first-degree cruelty to children after Cobb police found the severely malnourished body of her daughter Markea Berry at her home in the 600 block of Concord Road just outside Smyrna city limits.
Friday was not the first time Cobb police had come to Markea’s aid. In 2010, the department issued a search for her after she wandered away from her home. At that time, the police told the Atlanta Journal Constitution that the then 14-year-old Markea functioned at a third grade level. She was found safe the next day at Walmart in Austell.
Ebony Berry is still being held in Cobb County jail without bond. Other children found in the home Friday have been placed with the Department of Family and Children Services.

There are so many unanswered questions here. What did the mother say happened? Who made the call to police? What evidence was used to charge her with murder in the first degree?
