Walmart Starts Black Friday on Thanksgiving

The nation's largest retailer will roll out 2012 specials beginning at 8 p.m. on Nov. 22.

Black Friday? That was SO 2011.

Walmart, the nation's largest retailer, has announced that it will begin holiday shopping specials at 8 p.m. Thanksgiving Day, Nov. 22, according to media reports.

The retailing giant also began Black Friday shopping on Thanksgiving 2011, but at 10 p.m. In 2012, the specials start at 8 p.m. Eastern time.

The move could put more pressure on big-box retailers such as Target and Best Buy to push their own opening times earlier, according to Bizjournals.

According to an ad on Walmart.com, Black Friday/Thursday specials include $399 for an iPad 2 (16GB) and $148 for a 32-inch television.

Are you glad to see Black Friday deals extended further into Black Thursday? Or do you feel that it's overkill? Tell us in the comments.

This makes me sad and angry - can we please leave Thanksgiving alone?!

I agree. It's a day to be spent with family and friends, not focusing on material possessions. I hope enough people will hold the day sacred enough to just say no to these types of marketing gimmicks.

I totally agree with C.N.M. and Kat. Wow it's only one day and it's like they are trying to remove that. :(

It's been called the "Black Friday creep" and it hurts employees and their families. Some are taking action. A group of Walmart workers are planning to strike at about 1,000 stores on Black Friday.

More than 40 petitions have been launched on www.change.org asking retailers including Sears, Target, Walmart, and Kohl's to "give Thanksgiving back to families."

Some consumers are threatening to boycott those stores because they're putting revenue before employees. Walmart's motivation is its declining stock. Last week it dropped almost 4%.
