Welcome back, Patch Blogger!
Well Smyrna-Vinings (and you too Cumberland Community Improvement District), the time has come to say au revoir. This will be my final post as the Smyrna-Vinings Patch Local Editor as later today I will ease on southward down Atlanta Road towards the city to assume the same responsibilities with Midtown Patch. While I’m excited about the challenges ahead, I’m saddened a bit at bidding goodbye to this wonderful area, Smyrna-Vinings. It was 14 months ago last week that I helped birth this Patch, and this will be article No. 2,318 that has been published since. A lot has changed during this time…
Have you ever sent a press release to the editor of your Patch site and wondered when it was going to post? How about sent him or her a birth announcement or perhaps an obit (which are published free on Patch sites) or school award only to wonder if it was ever going to be published? Well, our Patch sites are designed in a way that is easy for users to post their own announcement without having to wait for the editor to post it for you. It really is the best way to post your announcement or press release if you are a nonprofit agency, for profit agency, government body or other group to get …
Happy New Year Smyrna-Vinings and here's wishing you all the best in 2012! As you can see from the accompanying video and photos, today’s Noon Year's Eve celebration hosted by the City of Smyrna and Radio Disney at the Smyrna Community Center was big fun for all. That party is done, but there’s still time to set personal resolutions before the New Year’s Eve celebration sets in. Your resolutions may be in the form of grandiose gestures—a vow to be a better spouse, for example—or be tied to a specific act, such losing weight, getting out of debt or quitting smoking. What are some of your New …
You may have seen from a Wednesday evening post here at Smyrna-Vinings Patch that the Vinings Historic Preservation Society has an archaeologist conducting research today and Friday at the historic Pace House on Paces Mill Road. Garrett W. Silliman is conducting field investigations using remote sensing to detect potential archaeological features and artifact signatures on the property.  As you might know, the Pace House was built with the remains of the 17-room antebellum home of Vinings founder Hardy Pace. The house served as General William T. Sherman's temporary headquarters where he …
While we were stuffing our face with turkey and gravy Thursday, we here at Smyrna-Vinings Patch neglected to give thanks for the fact that we have been online for a year now. Thursday was our one-year anniversary date and we’ll be publishing the year in pictures later on this Black Friday. In publishing just shy of 2,000 stories (this will be No. 1,983), we've gotten to know the community and have created a local following. It's been fantastic. In addition to site visitors, we're proud that we have almost 650 "likes" on our Facebook page and more than 1,100 Twitter followers. We're very …
Whether it's a hot cup of coffee for the morning commute, a fantastic massage or a dry cleaner who always manages to resurrect your favorite suit, there are products and services in almost everyone's routine that make life in Smyrna-Vinings a little better. To honor Small Business Saturday (Nov. 26) and Thanksgiving, Patch is asking you to post the products, businesses and practitioners in Smyrna-Vinings you couldn't live without. Is it the delicious frozen yogurt flavors and topping at Cowlicks? The baby back ribs at Jim 'N Nick's Bar-B-Q? Is it a great massage at Evene Day Spa? A jager shot…
Were you able to take advantage of the Columbus Day holiday and take the day off? I’m guessing that many of you were probably like me in that you didn’t. Hence, if you’re like me, you’re already behind this work week. Oh, well… But let’s try to play a little catch up here. As was mentioned Sunday here at the site, Smyrna mayoral candidate Alex Backry expressed concern to me about user generated comments concerning his once employment with the City. It has been posted here that he had been fired from the City. As he promised, Mr. Backry supplied me with a letter on City of Smyrna letterhead …
This week, I celebrated my one-year anniversary here at Patch. Actually, I began doing part-time work for Patch in July 2010, but didn’t officially become a full-time employee until late September of that year. This site ultimately launched the day before Thanksgiving last year and sometime in the coming days we’ll publish story No. 1,700 and counting. We’ve covered a lot of Smyrna-Vinings (and Cumberland CID) related stories, but there’s no doubt that we’re missing many stories, too. Nobody wants to hear excuses, but I sometimes wish there were more hours in the day. Or at least I could …
UPDATE - July 21, 2011 Good day people. This is a follow up to the original post dated some five weeks ago. The Patch terms of use are again listed below, but there continues to be issues following such with numerous individuals who regularly post at this site. In specific, too many of the comments fall into the category of defamatory, abusive and offensive. There have also been comments that are threatening, harassing and have promoted racism, bigotry and hatred. Indeed there have been “masked” profanity (e.g., F@&#) comments and several that have been blatantly inaccurate, false or …
Hello good people of Smyrna-Vinings, hope you’re beating the heat today because it’s going to be a scorcher. Wondering why you haven’t seen me posting on the shout rail there on the right side of the homepage of late? Maybe you haven’t, but because of a Patch glitch that the tech folks have assured me they’re working on, I haven’t been able to comment directly onto the shout rail for about 10 or so days now. And they tell me the issue most likely won’t be resolved until sometime late next week, just about the time I’m going to take some needed vacation time. And now here in the last 24 hours …
For the past several weeks we've been working to build this site, finding writers to cover the news in Smyrna and Vinings, building the most complete directory around, creating a community calendar and making it easy to use. We wanted to take this time to tell you why we're here and what this site is all about. Simply put, it's about you. We've built Patch so that you have plenty of opportunities to comment on stories, share your opinions, post photos and announcements and add events to the community calendar. We hope that our site will strengthen the community, but we can't do it without you…
