Welcome back, Patch Blogger!
“Eclectic” is probably one of the first words fans would use to describe the band Wilco. Defying exact categorization, this band pulls elements of alternative rock, indie rock, folk, Americana, and country rock into a coherent whole sound that is oddly compelling, yet not odd at all. Aptly described by Rolling Stone as "one of America's most consistently interesting bands" and "America's foremost rock impressionists," this outfit, led by singer and guitarist Jeff Tweedy, shows why critical acclaim and beloved fans flock to their music. Having seen them at The Fabulous Fox Theatre, this …
Traditional Americana and country music is the preferred genre card of incredible singer/songwriter Julie Gribble. A mesmerizing storyteller, Gribble spins irresistible, unusual narratives about love and romance as they play out in the modern world.  Often favorably compared to Lucinda Williams, Allison Krauss, and Natalie Merchant, Gribble has appeared on The Late Late Show with Craig Ferguson several times to entranced audiences. Aren’t we lucky that the talented Gribble will be performing in our own backyard, for free? Incredible local restaurant Blackstone Steak, Seafood & Spirits plays …
If you’re a music lover and a parent with little ones, chances are your “mini me’s” think Imagination Movers are the bomb. And you probably even like them a little bit, yourself. Show your rug rats just how cool you can be by taking them to see the rock stars of their generation at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Center on Saturday. This quartet of musicians from New Orleans knows how to ham it up for the kids and rock it out with a certain amount of hipness for the parents. The Imagination Movers’ “In a Big Warehouse” concert tour should demonstrate why these Emmy Award-winning dudes are all…
Caliente! That’s South-of-the-Border-speak for “hot.” While that absolutely defines the weather this week, we’re really referring to the fact that local rocker Hugh Vaughan will play soulful R&B and rockin' Blues on the patio at Twisted Taco Saturday evening beginning at 9 p.m. By that time, the steamy temperatures will have cooled down just a bit, making the patio a terrific neighborhood hangout. Toast the weekend’s beginning by quaffing a frosty beverage and listen to Vaughan and his “screamin’ guitar” singing the language of blues. What’s that? You didn’t know that Vaughan’s been onstage …
Try as one might, Soulhound cannot be categorized or pigeonholed into a nutshell description. A deep and wide foundation of soul is at the heart of their sound, which has been described as “the Meters meets Hendrix meets Steely Dan.” Soulhound brews up a potent concoction of genres: R&B, soul, a heavy dose of late 60s and 70s funk, like Parliament and Funkadelic. But just when you think you’ve got them all figured out, Soulhound can unleash a surprising jam-band vibe, akin to Phish, or throw in a few Beatles-inspired tunes. Playing a creative hodgepodge of genres rooted in soul, Soulhound is …
According to their facebook page, Jeff Hix and the Heretics are “on a worldwide tour of Vinings.” Like homing pigeons, they return often to the cozy Vinings Inn Attic Bar, where Hix and his Heretics work their magic on the regular crowd that knows and loves them with a passion. Starting from a rock and roll foundation, Hix layers on a groovy jam band-esque vibe. Accents of “soul, jelly roll, and jukin’ blues” round out the experience. Hix and the Heretics crank up the jam at their home perch at 9:30 both Friday and Saturday nights this weekend. No cover charge, but get there early if you want…
As most Smyrna residents know, Doc’s Food and Spirits is a regular Joe’s kind of establishment, featuring live music every weekend, Thursday through Saturday. Several times a month, The Larry Griffith Band rolls into Doc’s and they’ll be laying down the law of blues tonight and Saturday. Mixed with generous, spicy side dishes of R&B and soul, with a dash of funk, vocalist and lead guitarist Larry Griffith himself lays it on thick as molasses. It seems so believable, it’s as if he’s mining a seam of melancholy. Interesting song titles that are bound to get even more eclectically colorful when …
Strike up the band, it’s that time again as Smyrna-Vinings Patch gives you the low down on what’s hot on the music scene this weekend. But before we highlight these local vibes, let’s celebrate the news that Canoe will soon begin its Song of the South live music series on April 13. Check out local artists, including Tim Brantley in the series’ debut, every Wednesday complete with wine and tasty aperitif. Now onto this weekend as Social Vinings is the perfect place to be social with warm weather and the Men In Blues. These Atlanta favorites get down with all the blues you can use, and Creative…

Who says there’s no good live music in the Smyrna-Vinings area? We sure don’t because there's loads of local good vibes, and beginning today we’ll provide a weekly peek at who’s jamming where each weekend. Our happy Smyrna-Vinings Patch in the metro Atlanta area has become a hot spot for live entertainment. The dance floor heats up rather warmly and some venues, while others serve up their tunes to folks simply chilling on the patio with a cold one. Whatever it is you like, we’ll try to shine the spotlight on it here. And by all means, let us know what we’re missing by submitting reviews, …
