It was business as usual for Whitefield Academy on the hoops court Saturday night as the Wolfpack rolled to a 78-60 win over Southwest Atlanta Christian Academy. The victory was the 10th straight for the Pack, 17-3, which remains ranked No. 2 in the Class A polls. Senior Kenny Gaines paced the attack with 37 points, 12 rebounds, five steals, and three blocks. Eric Lockett added 12 pts, 11 rebounds, and two steals, while Lorenzo Carter chipped in with 10 points, 8 blocks and six rebounds. "I am not sure how many style points we will get after that win, but style points do not factor in the …
The Campbell Holiday Classic tips off today and both teams from the host school are looking for repeat performances that led to tournament titles a year ago. But it won’t be easy. The Campbell boys enter Wednesday’s 8:30 p.m. game versus Carver-Atlanta having dropped three straight contests. Overall, the Spartans are 4-4 on the season and struggling to find an identity with leading returning player Matt Cotton out for the season with a knee injury. In addition to Carver, Southwest Atlanta Christian and Forest Park are on the Spartans’ side of the bracket. The four teams in the other bracket …
It’s the weekend so it’s time to look at what’s up on this Sportopia Saturday Smyrna-Vinings Style. Of course, before their trip to the SEC Championship game next week, the Georgia Bulldogs head to Bobby Dodd Stadium today to face the 8-3 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets. Here's some news and commentary surrounding the game set to kickoff at noon: Coach Mark Richt told the media this week that the team will honor legendary broadcaster Larry Munson with a helmet decal this week: "Some of the guys knew a lot about Larry Munson, and some of the guys didn’t know a whole lot about Larry Munson just by …
After storming into the AA state playoffs last week with a 35-28 upset of Greater Atlanta Christian, the Lovett Lions to stay alive must beat a tough Carver Columbus team on the road. Known for producing Georgia Bulldog running backs, Carver sits atop Region 5-AA with only one loss, to defending state champion Buford. After shocking GAC at home on the friendly banks of the Chattahoochee River, Lovett must head to play Carver at a stadium that sits on a road called Victory Drive near a not-so-friendly section of the river. While the trip some 80 miles south to A.J. McClung Memorial Stadium for…
Will Muschamp serves as head coach for the first time in a Georgia-Florida game on Saturday, but brother Mike has his own important rivalry showdown to coach in this weekend. That game comes tonight as Lovett travels the short two miles down West Paces Ferry Road to face rival Westminster. The winner of the 7:30 p.m. game will likely have a far easier time getting past next week’s play-in game opponent to reach the Class AA state playoffs. Lovett, 6-2 overall and 3-1 6-AA Division B, has made the state playoffs in each of Muschamp’s six seasons at the school. Westminster, 4-4 and 3-1, routed …
Behind the strong running of Richard Sherrell and Khalen Pinkett, Whitefield Academy snapped a three-game losing skid with a 27-10 win at Strong Rock Christian this past Friday night. The victory improved the Wolfpack to 3-5 overall and 2-3 in region action as they return home this coming Friday to face Our Lady of Mercy. Sherrell ran for 117 yards and one touchdown on 16 carries, while Pinkett added 50 yards and two scores on five carries. Quarterback Max Kemether was 6 of 13 passing for 63 yards with his top two targets being Jay Fields (3 catches for 35 yards) and John Alar (2 for 26 yards…
Off their largest margin of victory win in five seasons, the Campbell Spartans will look to keep it rolling tonight as the Harrison Hoyas visit Smyrna for a clash of one-win teams. Last week is was a battle of winless clubs as Campbell traveled to Kennesaw, and after spotting its opponent an early 7-0 advantage, the Spartans roared back to score a 33-7 win over Kennesaw Mountain. That snapped a 13-game losing streak and marked the first win for coach Harris Rainbow in his initial season at CHS. Kickoff tonight between the Spartans, 1-5 overall and 1-2 in Region 4-AAAAAA play, and Harrison, 1-…
Lovett last week again showed itself a resourceful road team, beating Callaway 19-7 at the Cavaliers' home stadium. The Lions, 3-0 on the season, won its second away game, also beating Thomasville to open the 2011 campaign. Lovett will need all of that road toughness and more in a couple of weeks when the team heads up the interstate to Buford to play the state's most dominant team in Class AA. In the game at 5-AA's Callaway, the Lions matched a balanced offensive attack with a sturdy defense, outgaining the Cavs 270-144 in total yards. Behind Arthur Winbourne's 62 yards, Grant Haley's 57 and…
