About this column:

The “Smyrna Auction for Heroes Gala” will take place on Saturday, September 10, 2011, the day before the 10-year anniversary of 9/11. The Gala honors Smyrna’s own “heroes” - the firefighters and police officers who protect and serve their community every day. Leading up to the event, many of these heroes will be profiled here and on the "Smyrna Auctions for Hero Gala'' Facebook page so citizens can read about their careers and involvement in the community. Proceeds from the Gala benefit the Smyrna Public Safety Foundation (SPSF), a non-profit organization dedicated to supporting Smyrna’s public safety employees and funding the means for them to serve and protect the community even better.

City of Smyrna Policeman Kenneth Owens is honored here as the “Hero of the Week” by the “Smyrna Auction for Heroes Gala” Committee. Smyrna Police Corporal Kenneth “KB” Owens turned to the police force after a stint with the Marines in Desert Storm. During his time as a Marine, he saw himself with "a mission to do." Police work struck him as incorporating a similar kind of mission as the military. “I might have something to offer like I did in the Marines,” he said Although he admits the phrase is a cliché, he believes he “made a difference” with the Marines and continues to do so with the SPD…
City of Smyrna Firefighter Brian Marcos is honored here as the “Hero of the Week” by the “Smyrna Auction for Heroes Gala” Committee. “You can never have enough training in this line of work,” said David Maroney, who’s been a police officer for 13 years –11 with the Smyrna Police Department. But it took him awhile to figure that out. It wasn’t until he got older and started a family, he said, “that the appeal …
City of Smyrna Firefighter/Paramedic Pabel Troche is honored here as the “Hero of the Week” by the “Smyrna Auction for Heroes Gala” Committee. When asked about his career choice, Troche replied, “I became interested in being a firefighter after seeing the difference that the profession made in people’s lives during their most desperate times.” When firefighters battle to extinguish a home ablaze, they understand the occupants fear their family photos, grandmother’s china, or their high-school yearbooks will be lost forever. When firefighters can salvage these treasures for the occupants, it …
