Civil War Exhibit Featured in Smyrna

It's been a century and a half since Sherman marched through Smyrna.

Brawner Hall is hosting a three-day event featuring a collection of Civil War artifacts and lectures by Civil War historians to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Georgia Campaign and the Battle of Smyrna Camp Ground.

On July 4 and 5, 1864, Confederate and Union forces engaged in two battles in the Smyrna area, both won by the Confederates. However, the victory was short-lived, as Union troops outflanked southern positions and forced the Army of Tennessee to fall back to the Chattahoochee River Line.

Tuesday's opening ceremonies included cannon fire demonstrations and Civil War reenactors in full costume. In addition, speakers Michael Shaffer and Dr. Brian Willis spoke about Georgia and Smyrna's role during the Civil War.

Wednesday's lecture, which begins at 6 p.m., features Dr. William Marchione, who will explain the troop movements, battles, and defensive fortifications in the Smyrna and Cobb County areas during Sherman's March to the Sea.

On display inside Brawner Hall is part of the Cox/Armstrong Civil War Collection, which is comprised of Civil War artifacts recovered in the Smyrna area by longtime resident Gerald Cox. The City of Smyrna took over care of the collection upon Cox's death in 1996. Parts of the collection are located in Brawner Hall, City Hall, and the Smyrna City Library.
