Hardly Made in the Shade

The Heat Index is rising, but people are still out getting it done in the sun.

It is a hot one today no doubt about it.

According to WeatherBug.com, the forecast for Smyrna-Vinings calls for a high Heat Index reading to reach 103 by 4 p.m. In some areas it might reach 107. The heat index won't drop below 90 until 10 p.m., making hoping for that cooling breeze tonight to be fruitless.

A heat advisory means that a period of dangerous heat is expected. Drink plenty of fluids, stay in an air-conditioned room and stay out of direct sunshine. Remember the elderly, very young and people with heart conditions are most at risk in extreme heat.

Friends, relatives and neighbors should check on people who may be at risk. People are advised to reschedule strenuous activities to early morning or after sunset where possible and to know the signs and symptoms of heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

But that doesn’t mean people are out trying to beat the heat. Don’t forget that is holding its today from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. to benefit .

MUST, which serves residents in Cobb and Cherokee counties, has seen a significant increase in the number of people asking for assistance. The nonprofit organization that operates a food and clothing pantry in Smyrna has witnessed a 35-percent increase over this same time in 2010.

On a typical day the MUST food pantry gives out about 2,000 pounds of food. The first 20 people to bring in 10 pounds of food, approximately 10 or 15 regular-sized cans, will receive a $5 FARM bucks voucher good for $5 off at any of the vendors at .

Meanwhile, the boys of summer have been sweating it out this week at ’s Lattanzi Field, which is one of many parks around the state that is hosting games for the Perfect Game 2011 WWBA 17u National Championships this week. Four games a day have been scheduled at CHS Monday through Wednesday this week featuring teams from across the country.

Early Tuesday afternoon, all-star teams based out of West Chester, Penn., and Greenwich, Conn, were battling at Lattanzi Field as the tournament features some of the best high school players in America with numerous professional and college scouts on hand.
