Julia Roberts Attends Memorial Service for Sister in Smyrna

Roberts' half-sister Nancy Motes passed away in February.

Last weekend, Smyrna native Julia Roberts returned to her hometown to attend a memorial service for her late half-sister Nancy Motes.

Motes passed away in early February from an apparent drug overdose. She was 37.

The UK Daily Mail ran paparazzi photos of Roberts attending the Saturday service. Last month, Roberts briefly discussed the passing of Motes with Wall Street Journal magazine.

"It's just heartbreak," she told the publication. "It's only been 20 days. There aren't words to explain what any of us have been through in these last 20 days. It's hour by hour some days, but you just keep looking ahead.Β 

"You don't want anything bad to happen to anyone, but there are so many tragic, painful, inexplicable things in the world. But [as with] any situation of challenge and despair, we must find a way, as a family," she continues before straightening up in her chair. "It's so hard to formulate a sentence about it outside the weepy huddle of my family."
