Smyrna Family Needs Clothing After Fire

Daphne Adams and her family lost almost everything in last month's apartment blaze off Atlanta Road.

A Smyrna family who lost almost everything in an apartment fire last month is still attempting to pick up the pieces long after the smoke has cleared.

Daphne Adams and her family were able to gather up their pets and few other personal items before scurrying out the door during the Feb. 11 late-night blaze at The Aventine at Vinings. The fire injured no one, but did leave a dozen families homeless.

Adams had retired to bed for the evening before being awakened by son, Robert, as the fire broke out at the Atlanta Road complex. Along with daughter, Cydni, and Daphne’s boyfriend, the four thought they would be able to return for more items, but realized that would not be possible as they watched the building burn from across the street.

“It was very scary at the time and even for a few days after,” said Adams, a registered nurse who cares for her boyfriend, who is on dialysis. They’re now renting a Smyrna home, which has been furnished meagerly with donated items.

Her daughter attends , while Robert is a senior at . “She is adjusting slowly to the new place and has some usual effects of trauma,’’ Adams said of Cydni, while explaining that both children have needed professional counseling since the fire.

“The children had a difficult time getting back to their studies as they did not have any supplies with them, ” explained Adams.

It didn’t take long for Life Point Church members to spring into action to assist the Adams family. “After calculating the extent of their personal resources, and realizing that the need was much greater than what just a few people could do … we were able to give the family some food, food gift certificates, clothing, furniture and household items,” said Kathy Madonna, Outreach & Assimilation Director at the church that conducts services at Campbell High.

But more help is desired, as the children are in much need of clothing, especially pants and shoes. Other items of need include furniture and bed box springs. If you would like to contribute, please contact Daphne Adams at dladams628@aol.com or Kathy Madonna at kathy@rememberlifepoint.com.
