Smyrna to Celebrate 139 Years of Cityhood With a Bang

The city's birthday will feature bands, cake and fireworks.

The City of Smyrna turns 139 this year and she’s pulling out all the stops to celebrate with everything from bands to cake to fireworks.

The City of Smyrna was incorporated by the state legislature on August 23, 1872, said Teri Anulewicz, Ward 3 council member. This year the party will be a little early, Saturday, August 6, at Smyrna Village Green.

“It’s a great tradition,” Anulewicz said. “There are a lot of things people look forward to every year not the least of which is the band and the fireworks. The music is always a lot of fun and the fireworks are spectacular. But my favorite part has got to be the giant cake. I can’t think of anything wrong with free cake and cupcakes. They just do a fantastic job.”

“I think it’s neat that we do our fireworks in August just because it sets Smyrna apart from other communities around metro Atlanta,” she said. “It’s a fun thing to do. People like fireworks. It’s just a way to keep things different and keep things unexpected.”

There will also be activities throughout the evening at Smyrna Market Village. Some of the merchants plan to provide kids’ games and inflatables. There will even be a beer garden for the adults.

There will be limited parking for the event due to the range of the fireworks. Walking and carpooling is encouraged. There is no cost of admission to the event.
