Smyrna ZIP Code Change to Take Effect in 2014

Smyrna residents from around Log Cabin Drive to South Cobb Drive inside I-285 will get their new Vinings ZIP code next year.

A group of Smyrna residents who are looking to be part of 30339 Vinings will get their new ZIP code next year.

Back in March, residents from around Log Cabin Drive to South Cobb Drive inside I-285 requested to change their ZIP code from 30080 Smyrna to 30339 Atlanta (Vinings).

The U.S. Postal Service then sent out a ballot, allowing residents in the affected area to vote on ditching their Smyrna digits. As a result, a majority of residents in the proposed area of ZIP Code boundary change indicated they were in favor of the change, said USPS Atlanta District spokesperson Michael Miles.

Miles said the boundary realignment will take effect on July 1, 2014, and affected customers will be notified by letter of their new ZIP Code no later than May 31, 2014.Β

Some residents in the affected neighborhoods said "community identity" is the main reason they requested the ZIP code change. Although ZIP codes were designed for mailing purpose, they are also being used to calculate home sales, crime statistics and insurance rates nowadays.

"The Postal Service will deliver mail bearing the old ZIP Code for up to one year after the effective date," said Miles. "This will give time for business and residential customers to notify correspondents of their new address."
