Some Silver Comet Trail Bridges Close This Winter

The bridge repair and replacement projects are a precursor to a complete resurfacing of the trail during the spring of 2014.

Six pedestrian bridges along the popular Silver Comet Trail will be closed over the winter for maintenance and repair work, according to the Cobb Department of Transportation (DOT).

The DOT says that the bridge ends on Powder Springs Creek, Noses Creek, Lucille Creek, Nickajack Creek, Olley Creek, and Cooper Lake Road will either be repaired or replaced between January and April, 2014.

When the bridges are closed in consecutive order, there will be no access to or detours across them.

“The repairs will preserve the original historic pedestrian bridges,” said Faye DiMassimo, Director of Cobb DOT in a statement. “Once the work is completed, the pedestrian bridges will be reopened providing safe access to all who enjoy using them.”

While the bridges are being repaired or replaced, other crews will be working on improving drainage and grading along certain sections of the Silver Comet Trail, the release said.

Once the bridges are repaired next spring, Cobb DOT expects to perform a rolling trail closure along the entirety of the route to allow for a complete resurfacing of the whole trail.
