'The Debt' Is a Good Investment of Your Time

It's time to go Nazi hunting in an espionage thriller filled with action and surprising revelations.

It's time to go Nazi hunting in an espionage thriller filled with action and surprising revelations.

Six actors play three roles over a 30-year time period in this thriller about Nazis, Israeli spies and all sorts of lies in "The Debt."

Helen Mirren plays a retired Israeli Mossad agent named Rachel who is honored for her role in the assassination of a Nazi War criminal in 1965. Thirty years have passed, but questions still remain. Did she and associate Stephan (Tom Wilkinson) and others really kill their target? After an apparent suicide of a certain spy, Mirren rewinds the entire mission 30 years prior. Jessica Chastain plays a young Mirren, who along with Sam Worthington's character, build suspense across two different time periods in a film that will leave you on the edge of your seat.

The film lurches back and forth three decades exposing mysteries, secrets and even some lies. Without giving too much away, I will simply tell you Mirren has to make things right -- even if it is 30 years in the making. The suspense is tense, the pacing between the two time periods is fluid, and there is a bit of sexual tension thrown in for good measure. This is a political thriller worth watching simply because it is so much smarter and realistic than many of the movies out there. Consider it brain food.

The flick-o-meter gives "The Debt" a good four out of five. This gritty suspense movie is worth the price of admission. Going to see "The Debt" is one investment you should make. One side note, the Mossad (the Israeli CIA) do not mess around.
