Cobb Energy's Shuler Hensley Awards to be aired Friday

Vinings resident shines at musical theatre awards ceremony; lots of performances and event happenings in the coming weeks at Cobb Energy.

Whether it plays classic rock, opera, musicals or ballet, the has something for everyone. Check out what’s happening this month and next.

The Third Annual Shuler Hensley Awards honoring musical theater in Georgia high schools will broadcast Friday, Aug. 12, at 8 p.m. on WSB-TV Channel 2. The awards show took place this past April at Cobb Energy and honored students in 15 different categories including overall production, leading actor and actress, supporting actor and actress, music direction, costume, lighting and scenic design and chorus ensemble.

Vinings resident Jamie Harwood, who graduated from Lovett in the spring, received the best actress award at the ceremony. The awards are a part of Artsbridge, Cobb Energy’s educational program, and are intended to focus attention on the importance of keeping theater opportunities in high schools.

Channel 2’s regularly scheduled program “Shark Tank” will air the following day at 1 p.m.

Access the Arts comes up later this month on Sunday, Aug. 21 from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m., and on Monday, Aug. 22 from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. This showcase of Cobb Energy’s resident companies—Gas South Broadway Series, The Atlanta Opera and Atlanta Ballet—features entertainment, raffles, and food and drink samples from the centre’s executive chef M.G. Farris and local restaurants. It also offers patrons a chance to “test-drive” the centre’s seats.

The resident companies will also be offering special promotions on subscriptions. Gas South Broadway Series is offering a complimentary ticket to “Neil Berg’s Broadway Holiday Show” for every subscription purchased. The Atlanta Opera is waving the $15 fee for every subscription purchased. Atlanta Ballet season subscribers will receive a limited edition Atlanta Ballet poster from the Charlie McCullers “Steel Toes” collection and 50 percent off additional add-on performances.

The grand prize raffle is a ticket package that includes tickets to all four Gas South Broadway Series performances, a pair of tickets to one Atlanta Ballet performance and one production of The Atlanta Opera. Admission to the event is free.

A pair of Tyler Perry productions rounds out August and kicks off September at the facility. “Tyler Perry’s Aunt Bam’s House,” a new musical stage play about a weekend spent with Madea’s partner in crime, is performed Tuesday, Aug. 30 at 8 p.m. and Wednesday, Aug. 31 at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. Tickets are $25 plus fees.

Another Tyler Perry play debuts later in the week. “Tyler Perry’s I Don’t Want to Do Wrong,” a play about a newly wed medical student who has to move back in with her zany family while her husband is in Iraq, will be performed Friday, Sept. 2, at 8 p.m. and Saturday, Sept. 3, at 2 p.m. and 8 p.m. Tickets are $25 plus fees.

The following week The Beach Boys are in town for one night only, Friday, Sept. 9, at 8:30 p.m. Tickets are $40, $50, $65 and $100 plus fees.

The following weekend, enjoy an evening honoring home grown performers at the Georgia Music Hall of Fame Awards. This year's honorees include Toni Braxton, Mothers Finest, Paul Cochran, Jan Smith, Judy Argo, Hall Johnson and Sonny Terry.

Justin Bieber is also scheduled to perform a tribute to Smith, his vocal coach and musica mentor. Tickets are $48 to $98 plus fees or tune in at home for free as the show will be broadcast live by Georgia Public Broadcasting.

Wednesday, Sept. 28, and Thursday, Sept. 29, Wilco will perform at Cobb Energy with special guest Nick Lowe. The performance begins at 8 p.m. and tickets are $38 plus fees. In an effort to prevent ticket scalping, Wilco enforces a four ticket per person limit and only allows will-call ticket purchases.

End September with a concert that benefits college and university music programs. KANSAS will perform Friday, Sept. 30 at 8 p.m. with the Kennesaw State University Symphony Orchestra. Tickets are $37 and $57 plus fees. A limited number of student tickets are available for $20 with a valid student ID at the box office. There is a two-ticket limit per student ID.
