Good Music Fills the Air this Weekend

Plenty of variety this weekend: blues, jazz, John Mayer-esque, and even Rat Pack gems await.

Try as one might, Soulhound cannot be categorized or pigeonholed into a nutshell description. A deep and wide foundation of soul is at the heart of their sound, which has been described as “the Meters meets Hendrix meets Steely Dan.” Soulhound brews up a potent concoction of genres: R&B, soul, a heavy dose of late 60s and 70s funk, like Parliament and Funkadelic. But just when you think you’ve got them all figured out, Soulhound can unleash a surprising jam-band vibe, akin to Phish, or throw in a few Beatles-inspired tunes. Playing a creative hodgepodge of genres rooted in soul, Soulhound is musical entertainment at its finest. Suffice it to say that if you catch the Soul Train, you’ll have a funky good time watching them perform at tonight. Tunes crank up at 10:30 p.m. and keep the party going until 2:30 a.m. No cover charge.

Luck Be A Lady Tonight. Attention, Rat-Pack fans: longtime Atlanta musician Tommy Dean is a creative force with which to be reckoned. He brings his tidal wave of talent to Ray’s on the River tonight. Although well-versed in many genres, vocalist Dean will be accompanied by himself playing an old-school upright acoustic bass and Mike Ewbank tickling the ivories. The duo will wow the crowd with jazz standards, classic Americana, blues and a sprinkling of Rat Pack gems. Music begins at 8 p.m. in the bar area and there is no cover charge.

Bring on the romance at , a cozy wine and tapas spot that bodes well as a venue for a date or rendezvous. Nosh and sip vino as you woo your significant other to the sounds of great local music. Friday features acoustic performer Clayton Lee strumming and singing in a John Mayer/Jason Mraz kind of vibe. Billy Florkowski entertains on Saturday with his upbeat selection of covers and originals.
