Madly in Love with Opera

The 2011-12 season for The Atlanta Opera opens Saturday night at the Cobb Energy Performing Arts Centre.

Many of us “uncultured” folk have never experienced the opera in real life. If you are indeed one of us, why not take the short jaunt to the to see The Atlanta Opera perform Lucia di Lammermoor.

The website summarizes the story thusly: “Lucia’s forced marriage sets off a chain of tragic events that leads to the most spectacular mad scene in opera. Donizetti’s Lucia di Lammermoor reveals chilling tragedy on a grand scale and will leave you breathless.”

Authentic opera is always sung in Italian, but there will be helpful English supertitles above the stage. Luca di Lammermoor begins Saturday, Nov. 12 at 8 p.m. Other show times are Tuesday, Nov. 15, at 7:30 p.m., Friday, Nov. 18 at 8 p.m. and Sunday, Nov. 20 at 3 p.m.

The approximate running time is three hours and ticket prices begin at $24 via Ticketmaster. If you really want to celebrate your birth into the world of high culture, a party marking the opening of the season will be held just after the show on Saturday night.

Reception tickets will be sold in advance by calling 404-881-8885 and include a glass of bubbly, a decadent dessert, and rubbing elbows with the cast. Highbrow, indeed.
