Saturday Night Free!

Three Smyrna entertainment options tonight that don't cost a buck, plus one Sunday evening affair with gospel singer Sandi Patty that's well worth the price of admission.

It's Saturday and it's hot. No plans later? Here's some entertainment options that won't hurt the wallet too badly.

Reid Stevens' CD release performance is free tonight at begining at 7. On his facebook page, Stevens says his lyrics “contain positive messages and many of his own experiences to share with others.’’

There’s a YouTube performance here.

It’s free at Varner’s Tavern tonight, too, as rev up the testosterone by watching UCF 134. Ultimate Fighting Champion middleweight Anderson Silva fights on his home soil of Brazil, which is believed by many to be the birthplace of the sport.

Fourteen Brazilian fighters are on the card and Rio de Janeiro is hyped wild in anticipation as Silva takes on Japanese challenger Yushin Okami (26-5), who scored a win by disqualification over Silva (30-4) five years ago. The 184-pound Silva, considered by many as being pound-for-pound the best fighter in mixed martial arts, has won 14 straight fights since. Varner's is located at 725 Concord Road and the UFC action begins at 9 p.m.

It’s free across the street from Varner’s with The Underground Sound Band starting at 9 p.m. Describing themselves as “four guys and a chick who love classic rock and are having a blast making music,” Mad Mel & Underground Sound Band respectably pull off Janis Joplin, the Doors, the Stones, Lynyrd Skynyrd, U2, Clash, Foo Fighters and much, much more.

And OK, it’s not free, but it is beautiful music. Acclaimed Christian vocalist and Gospel Music Hall of Fame member Sandi Patty will be singing Sunday evening at Mount Paran Church located at 2055 Mount Paran Road. Along with special guests Larnelle Harris, Wayne Watson and Heather Payne, the traditional gospel singer Patty will be joined by the 150-voice Mount Paran choir.

Patty has recorded more than 30 albums and garnered numerous awards, including 40 GMA Dove Awards, five Grammies and four Billboard Music Awards. Doors open at 6 p.m. and the music begins at 7.

General Admission tickets are $15. $30 procures VIP upfront seating and an invitation to the artist meet and greet reception prior to the event. For more information, check Mount Paran’s website or call 404-923-8700.
