Campbell, Cobb Students Compete for National Merit Scholarships

Sixty Cobb County high school seniors will join 16,000 of their peers in a competition for 8,000 National Merit Scholarships for the spring of 2014.

Each state is allotted a certain number of semifinalists based on the national percentage of students graduating from high school. Semifinalists are chosen based on their performance on the Preliminary SAT (PSAT).

Now that the students have been named semifinalists, each must detail their extracurricular activities and student awards in essay format, and must earn endorsement from a school official. Students must also score well on the SAT.

The 8,000 students that will receive approximately $35 million in National Merit Scholarships represent less than one percent of the initial 1.2 million students eligible for them.
