Griffin Middle School Earns $2,000 Grant

The school received grant money to improve the reading and critical thinking skills of its students.

A Smyrna middle school has been recognized by a national retail chain for its efforts in promoting literacy and critical thinking skills among its students.

Griffin Middle School was given a $2,000 youth literacy grant from the Dollar General Literacy Foundation to help the school's Discussion, Reading, and Writing (DRAW) initiative.

According to the school's website, the DRAW program is designed to help Griffin's students improve their reading and writing skills and enhance their ability to analyze text and respond critically to things they read.

The grant was just one of roughly 650 youth literacy grants, totaling some $2.5 million, that the Dollar General Literacy Foundation awarded at the beginning of the 2013-14 school year.
