Former City Employee Accused of Theft

Shea Daniels is facing a half dozen theft charges after being accused of stealing money from the City of Smyrna and its customers.

A former City of Smyrna employee is facing a half dozen theft charges after being accused of stealing from the city, its customers, and causing the loss of thousands of dollars in tax money.

Machelle (Shea) Daniels, Smyrna's former city facilities manager and event coordinator, is responsible for the loss of more than $35,000 in city funds between December 2011 and January 2013, according to a warrant released today by the Cobb County Magistrate Court.

The warrant states that Daniels, who helped operate and rent out city facilities including Brawner Hall and Aunt Fanny's Cabin, took cash and checks on numerous occasions that were supposed to be for rentals, and used them for personal reasons.

Authorities said the checks for rentals were cashed at the patrons bank or deposited into one of three bank accounts that are linked to Daniels or her family members in attempt to conceal the theft of city funds.

City administrator Eric Taylor told WSB-TV that city facilities are being rented and used as normal after officials have fully investigated Daniels' case.
