Plus education news and more you can use this Tuesday.

After having much of last week’s productivity strangled by the lingering winter ice storm, and then celebrating Martin Luther King Jr. Day on Monday, life has returned to a sense of normalcy this Tuesday with local businesses and schools open and operational.

  • On the topic of schools, the good news keeps rolling in for , which has been recognized in the January issue of Atlanta Magazine as being one of Atlanta’s Best High Schools. The honor came based on a review of course offerings, extracurricular activities, SAT scores, etc. as CHS was also tabbed as a “Top Achiever'' in the areas of math/science and fine arts.

That comes on the heels of the November news that CHS, after having originally thought not to have made Adequate Yearly Progress (AYP) following summer testing, indeed did make AYP in 2010 according to the Georgia Department of Education. It marked the second straight year of attaining adequate progress for the school, therefore removing it from ‘Needs Improvement’ status.

  • Also on the school front this Tuesday, Campbell’s state-ranked basketball teams are back in action tonight at Region 4-AAAAA rival Kennesaw Mountain. The Lady Spartans tip first at 6 p.m. as they enter play 10-4 overall and 3-1 in region play following Saturday’s 57-51 win at Marietta. The Lady Mustangs, 5-7 and 1-3, are tied for last place in the region while Campbell enters riding a three-game winning streak.

Coach James Gwyn’s Spartans won their first 11 games this season, but have now dropped two of three following Saturday’s upset loss at Marietta. The third-ranked Spartans are a perfect 4-0 in region action, but should be challenged by a Kennesaw Mountain team that is 9-4 and 1-3 having won five of its last six overall.
