Lovett remembers Bill Conley

"He always knew how to get the most of what you could bring,'' said Clint Conley about his father, Bill.

More than 100 people gathered at The Lovett School on Saturday to remember Coach Bill Conley.

Conley passed away on July 23 at his home in Jasper. Conley started as the school’s football coach in 1963 and led the Lions to their only state championship in 1970.

He spent 33 years at the school and was responsible for building and administering the athletic program, and coached softball in addition to football. He also served as chair of the Art Department and Upper School Assistant Principal.

"Coach Conley did more than just coach," said Lovett alumnus and parent Carter Pope. "He shaped people's lives. He commanded respect, and you gave it, no questions asked. We were fortunate to have him."

The family has set up a memorial page on Facebook, with information, reminisces, and photos. In lieu of flowers, the family has requested that any donations be sent to the Bent Tree Beautification of the Lake and Wildlife Association, 40 Little Pine Mountain Road, Jasper, Ga. 30143.
