The Children's Museum of Atlanta Announces February Programming

The Children’s Museum of Atlanta invites families to enjoy an entire month of special events and educational programs featuring Black History Month, a special guest appearance from children’s author Morris Mapp and the newest learning exhibit, Sonic Sensation! Children can fuel their imaginative minds through the power of play by engaging in interactive stations offered all month-long. Below is a schedule of exhibit information and special programming for February 2014.

Feature Exhibit: Sonic Sensation

February 15 – June 1

Listen up! The newest exhibit at The Children’s Museum of Atlanta invites families to sound off on a multi-sensory adventure! This new, highly engaging exhibit offers a fun and informative opportunity for children to understand the anatomy, measurement and science of sound.

 

The exhibit features a variety of interactive, hands-on activities for children to see, feel and hear sound. Visitors can experiment with pitch, test their listening skills, make a movie soundtrack and much more! As children engage with multiple learning stations throughout the exhibit, they will discover key listening skills through the science of sound and hearing.

 

Daily Programming during Black History Month (offered through February 14):

 

Laugh and Learn

Mondays and Saturdays at 10:30 a.m.; Sundays at 11:00 a.m.

Join your Imaginators and learn about African American poets, performers and African American influence on jazz.

 

Mini-Musical: Turn the Mystery into History

Mondays and Tuesdays at 11:30 a.m.; Thursdays and Fridays at 11:00 a.m.;

Saturday at 11:00 a.m.; Sundays at 12:00 p.m.

Join the Imaginators as they take a musical Black History Month field trip to the “Museum of Arts, Science, and Sports.”  You will celebrate the great things that have been achieved by some of the many African- Americans that have called Georgia their home.  Playwright: Jerry G. Jacob Lawrence Craft (February 17-28)

Monday, Tuesday, Thursday and Friday at 1:00 p.m.

Explore the colorful paintings of African American artist Jacob Lawrence and create your own story inspired by his work.

 

Movement and Music: Let’s Groove, Stay Active (February 1-28)

Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Saturday at 2:00 p.m.

Come and join an Imaginator with our own Motown move groove! Music and exercise is a winning combination!

 

Movement and Music: Soul Train (February 1-28)

Sundays at 2:00 p.m.

Join the Imaginators for a black history celebration and dance to the music from the past and present.

 

Storytime: Jacob Lawrence (February 1-28)

Monday, Tuesday, Thursday, Friday and Sunday at 3:00 p.m.

Join your Imaginator for a reading of Jacob Lawrence in the City which brings to life a bustling city, complete with builders rat-a-tatting and children playing in the streets.

Join Mr. Echo, the Tone Ranger and F.M. Radio as you name that noise, become a sound wave and learn how sound travels through our ears and into our brains!

Saturdays at 11:00 a.m. (and 3:00 p.m. on February 1 & 29); Sundays at 12:00 p.m.

Aliens, acting as ambassadors from the planet Soundsoff, visit Earth to prepare their species to live in harmony with the humans. Upon their arrival the Aliens decide planet Earth is much too noisy for habitation. It becomes their mission to remove all sound from planet Earth.  Human rock star, DJ, must stop them.  Will DJ be able to convince the Aliens to keep sound on the planet before their Chief Commander, the mysterious X, comes to Earth? Both DJ and the aliens learn great lessons about protecting your hearing and the importance of sound along the way.

 

Puppet Show: A Trip To The Farm SOUNDS Good To Me

Special February Programming:

 

Guest Author Morris Mapp

February 1 at 4:00 p.m. and February 22 at 12:00 p.m.

Children are invited to join Children’s Author and Educator Morris Mapp, as they travel in history to learn about Atlanta's own Alonzo Herndon – the story of a man who rose from slavery to become a millionaire. “From Shanty to Fancy” captures images of an inspiring story from which everyone can learn!

 

Meet the Holidays: Chinese New Year

Saturday, February 1 at 12:00 and 3:00 p.m.

Sunday, February 2 at 3:00 p.m.

Join the Imaginators in celebrating the Chinese New Year and the year of the horse! Children can listen to the story “Bringing in the New Year” by Grace Lin and then celebrate this colorful holiday by creating their own fabulous dragon – worthy of any parade!

 

Art Through Medicine Health Fair

Art Through Medicine is a fun and engaging health fair designed for children and their caregivers. Help your children take charge of their health with fun activities, learning about the “art” in the art of medicine, and meeting medical students from across the country. Art Through Medicine will include student created visuals and children's activities along with medical students educating parents and their children on healthy living. The event is a collaboration with The Children’s Museum of Atlanta, SCAD Savannah College of Art and Design-Atlanta, and the American Medical Association’s National Student Chapter.

 

Alma Mexicana Dance

Saturday, February 15 at 12:00 p.m.

Enjoy a special performance of traditional Mexican dances from Alma Mexicana, meaning Mexican Soul.

 

Special Band Performance

Friday, February 21 at 11:00 a.m.

Fifth grade band students from Centennial Place Elementary will be performing a selection of songs connected to African American history! The ensemble will showcase a variety of instruments, and students will be able to answer questions about their instruments at the end of the program!

The Children's Museum of Atlanta

The Children's Museum of Atlanta is a smart place to play and a non-profit organization offering a family-friendly space filled with interactive, educational exhibits and programming for children ages eight and under. The Museum’s mission is to spark imagination and inspire discovery and learning for all children through the power of play. The Museum’s four permanent learning zones consist of bright, creative, hands-on exhibits that are designed to give children an opportunity to learn through play. The Children’s Museum of Atlanta also offers parties, memberships, field trips, summer camp, and private events.

 

Museum hours: Monday through Friday 10:00 a.m. – 4:00 p.m. and Saturday and Sunday 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m. Closed Wednesdays mid-August through mid-June. Open Wednesdays during peak weeks during the holidays, spring and summer. Closed Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day; open until 1:00 p.m. Christmas Eve. Open New Year’s Eve.
