Community vs crime

First let’s admit that there is no such thing as a crime-less community. The utopian idea that we can prevent all crime is unrealistic. However, we can have a community with less-crime. Now that’s an attainable goal.I believe that we achieve a community with less-crime by making it harder for those of an lawless mindset to commit crime. We have to fight crime as a community and to not solely rely upon law enforcement. Creating a community begins with us knowing something about our neighbours and our neighbours knowing something about us. Being disconnected from those who live around you only makes our community ripe for crime. How well do you know your neighbours? Do you do a little more than a perfunctory wave as you dash from your driveway into you home? Do you know enough about your neighbour to be alarmed to see a moving truck at their front door? All crime is a crime against community not just the individual. We fight crime as a community by caring for one another and by extending our concern beyond ourselves. We will never have a crime-less community but we can have a community with less-crime.
