Do You Expect the World to End on Dec. 21, 2012?

With end of the Maya's "long count" calendar set for Dec. 21, there have been predictions about the world coming to an end.

There are reportedly many parties planned for Dec. 20 or 21 this year, just in case. With the "long count" calendar of the Ancient Mayans coming to an end that day, some people are a little pessimistic about any calendar continuing past that date.

Experts on the matter, however, say we've got nothing to worry about. According to an article on nbcnews.com, "Experts estimate the system starts counting at 3114 B.C., and will have run through 13 baktuns, or 5,125 years, around Dec. 21. Experts say 13 was a significant number for the Maya, and the end of that cycle would be a milestone — but not an end."

Some people believe the Maya may have predicted "impending astronomical disasters that would coincide with 2012, ranging from explosive storms on the surface of the sun that could knock out power grids to a galactic alignment that could trigger a reversal in Earth's magnetic field."

But according to the article, that is not the case. In fact Mayan predictions go way past our present-day, indicating that they expected a future to come even after their long count calendar came to an end.

There have been several predictions of the end of the world, including the May 21, 2011 biblical prediction by then 89-year-old old "minister" Howard Camping. At that time, Patch columnist Ben Cathey made his own prediction that it would not come to pass. Indeed he was right. On May 22, 2011, the sun rose just as surely as it had the day before.

What do you think about the predictions of the world ending on Dec. 21, 2012? Will it just be another normal day for you or are you planning an End of the World celebration, just in case?

When/if the world ends on Dec. 21, it only means that I'll just get to be 70 for one day....

(1) Apocalypse means: Lifting of the Veil of Ignorance, and it happens individual to people (personified ideas), because wisdom (lit. white field; error-FREE realm) must eliminate error-laden states from within like false Math results & dead body-cells. (2) All is Light: Genesis 1:3, and it renews itself every trillionth of each second, as the higher States of 4th-Layer wisdom replenish the earth (feedback-forum for heavenly blue-print). In other words, just as Commandment #2 says, ALL is Fleeting and NOT graven. Be open-minded & flexible to absorb NEW wine, or newly and correctly interpreted obsolete interpretation of wisdom (Jesus' flesh) and its application (Jesus' blood-circulation).

I don't know if the world will end on the 21st. I'll let you know what happens on the 22nd.

It's not the end of the world. It's the end of time as we know it. Check out this potentially world changing project. http://www.facebook.com/IAmTimeLoop

I think it's 5x better than a new years party for a new millenium :-) One thing to note that this 13 baktun is special because the winter solstice sun on Dec 21 will pass between the earth and galactic equator when the earth is at a seasonal extreme. This kind of event only happens once every 25800 years.

By the way, you forgot to mention one major point in your article that this event for some (probably at least 1 million people in the U.S. alone) marks the approximate center point for a period they believe humanity is gradually transitioning to a "new age" of spiritual and social enlightenment over about a 60 year process, starting in 1988 and ending in approximately 2036. These people are called "new agers" and follow "new age spirituality" which mixes many Eastern and Western traditions since it isn't a religion, per-se.
