'Lawless' an Early Oscar Contender

An all-star cast goes bootlegging in a film full of violence and great acting.

The summer is wrapping up, and we already have a film that has Oscar implications.

Tom Hardy plays legendary bootlegger Forrest Bondurant, and Guy Pierce is hot on his trail in Lawless, a film full of violence and great acting.

There is never a dull moment in this film that is narrated by Shia LaBeof, who plays Forrest's younger brother. Pierce plays a psychotic federal agent hell-bent on stopping the brothers. Jessica Chastain plays a former dancer and Hardy's love interest. She becomes his partner in crime in this film about moonshine bootlegging and its life-changing consequences.

This film is violent, intense and even funny at times. The romantic element between Hardy and Chastain adds an extra quality to make the entire cinematic experience memorable.

The movie version is a bit different from the real life history of the actual Bondurant brothers but, as you will see, it's worth it.

It may not get the Oscar notoriety in the best movie category but individual performances from Hardy, Pierce, and Chastain should get some recognition from the Academy come awards time.

So the Flick-O-Meter gives Lawless a four out of five. The violence in the film will keep you on the edge of your seat, even though some of it is a bit cringe-worthy. In the end it's not a perfect film but it certainly is worth watching (I'm sure the Academy will also take note).

Do you think Lawless can snag an Oscar nomination? Tell us in the comments.

One of the part-time actors in this film is a resident of Smyrna and actually works full time at our local Kia dealer

Are these the apartments that were once called "Garrison Plantation"?
Lissa K. June 15, 2013 at 09:32 pm
This is Garrison Plantation - Garrison Lakes - Lakefront Vista. I lived there when it was familyRead More owned. It went from sister to brother then sold. Changed name from Garrison Plantation (because it wasn't PC) (but no one thought about what a garrison was) to Garrison Lakes (there's only one lake) to Lakefront Vista (under new ownership.) It's a dump now. The layout and size of the apts. are great. Even the location is great. Still know some people there. But it went downhill.

I'd rather answer the question "How do you feel about Roswell Street Baptist Church?" MyRead More answer: can't stand it. This incident is just another in its long and bigoted history. During the anti gay lifestyle debacle it gave out copies of the 10 Commandments. That anti gay resolution drafted by Gordon Wysong and enacted by the Cobb Co. Commissioners cost the county an Olympic venue. Whenever I hear about that church I think of the OM who called the church's prominent members The Marietta Mafia!

Its sad, that young people who are gay and often struggle to accept themselves as they are, faceRead More such fury and rejection by a church that preaches love, compassion and forgiveness for most but not all. No wonder many young people, the vast majority of whom are or will be heterosexual find the church increasingly irrelevant in their lives with attitudes like this.
