School Ratings

I've been living in Smyrna since '07 and I've loved it. I was single for most of this time and didn't really care what the schools did. Now I have a fiance and a baby on the way, and we've got to choose where to live. I'm fighting the good fight for Smyrna, but the fiance is not having it. Frankly, the school ratings suck, with the exception of some elementary schools. I'd rather not have these stupid little numbers dictate where I live for the foreseeable future... How can an area that is so nice have such crappy schools? Are the numbers outdated? Can I expect the ongoing revitalization of Smyrna to reflect in the school ratings in the next ten years? The gerrymandered school districts are crazy, and it would look like the schools are practically segregated by race. Someone give me some info to make my case against the fiance, or I will probably end up in that cultureless suburban nightmare called East Cobb. Ugh. And don't say private school - most of those cost more for a first grader than a year of my college education did.
