Atlanta Road Apartment Fire Displaced 12 Families

Home, possessions lost for 12 renters in fire at Aventine at Vinings complex late Friday.

A fire that burned a Smyrna apartment building Friday night injured no one but left a dozen families homeless and destroyed all of their possessions.

According to Deputy Fire Chief Roy Acree, firefighters received an alarm at 10:20 p.m. about a structural fire at Building 1700 of The Aventine at Vinings complex at 3385 Atlanta Road.

“Upon arrival they found a heavy fire, going through the roof,” Acree said.

Acree said 35 firefighters from the City of Smyrna Fire Department worked on the scene for several hours before bringing the blaze under control.

Acree said the fire consumed 12 of the 24 units of the building’s “D” side.

“We were able to account for everyone in the building,” Acree said.

The American Red Cross, he said, worked at the scene to provide assistance to displaced residents.

According to a report Saturday afternoon on Fox 5 WAGA-TV, the Red Cross found temporary housing for one family, assisted several others and confirmed that the remaining displaced residents had found shelter.

Acree said Saturday that the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
