Copper has become a prime target of thieves who gut commercial air conditioning units and plumbing, then sell the loot as scrap for a hefty profit.
Unfortunately, some professional buildings on Concord Road in Smyrna have begun to fall victim to thefts of this nature.
According to a report from WSB-TV, Smyrna dentist Dr. Jim Pitts was victimized by copper thieves last week, and tried to stop a theft while in progress but was thwarted.
The thefts are costing the Concord Road business owners, as several professional offices have been closed due to the theft parts of their power or water systems.
According to Insurance Journal, Georgia was the sixth-worst state in the country for metal thefts between 2010 and 2012. There were 1,953 claims during the period, which averaged out to 19.7 claims per 100,000 residents.
