Cops: Girl, 5, Molested in Smyrna

A Tucker man is accused of molesting a 5-year-old girl for more than a year, including once in Smyrna, according to a Cobb County criminal warrant.

Craig Alan Ellett was arrested just before 4 p.m. Friday on Interstate 20 and Flat Shoals Road on charges of aggravated sodomy, aggravated child molestation and cruelty to children in the first degree, according to online jail records. He is being held in the Cobb County Jail without bond.

The latest incident occurred around noon Feb. 6 in the 800 block of Galleria Lane SE, which is in Smyrna, records show.

"Although the last incident of sodomy with the 5-year-old victim occurred in Cobb County," an officer wrote in the warrant, "the sexual abuse of the 5-year-old victim had been going on for about a year and a half in another jurisdiction and the 5-year-old female victim was told by said accused not to tell anyone."

But the girl did tell a family member about the alleged abuse, said Lt. Joseph Bennett with the Smyrna Police Department criminal investigations division.

"The family member who had knowledge about this reported it to a mandated reporter," he said, "and the mandated reporter reported it to us and that's how the investigation began."

Mandated reporters include everyone from school counselors to doctors.

Bennett, who did not know the suspect's age, said the incident was "under investigation for approximately a month before charges were taken.

"We are continuing our investigation to confirm that this is the only incident and that there aren't other incidents or victims out there."
