“The call came in at 11:58 am, and when we arrived on the scene, the driver couldn’t explain why his vehicle would have caught on fire,” said Denell Boyd, public information officer for the Cobb County Fire Department. “There were packages in there, but he didn’t think any of them would have caused the fire.”

After the fire was out, Cobb HazMat personnel checked the site, and eventually gave the all-clear signal. All of the department’s responding units went back into service around 1:45 pm.

Safety officials on the scene said they were taking everything into consideration with their preliminary investigation.

“They’re being extremely cautious,’’ said Lee Tharp, Cumberland Mall’s general manager. “One of the drivers noticed some flames and called the fire department and they immediately responded.’’

The truck was parked in an ally near the northeast corner of the mall near Costco. Check back with Smyrna Patch as more information becomes available.
