Fishermen Discover Body in the Chattahoochee River

Cobb police are treating the investigation as a homicide.

Cobb County police are asking for the public’s help to identify a body two fly fishermen discovered in the Chattahoochee River near an Akers Mill apartment complex around 7:30 a.m. Wednesday morning. The Crimes Against Persons Unit is investigating the case, as it’s believed to be a homicide.

Police describe the victim as a black male about 5’10” with numerous tattoos. Cobb County’s Public Information Officer Dana Pierce said the body is too badly decomposed to offer any other details about the victim’s features.

“Typically what happens when a body gets in the water is it decomposes,” he said. “If the body initially goes down underneath the water and let’s just say for example it gets hung up on rocks it’s only a matter of time before the body will refloat because of decomposition. That complicates matters a bit. We just know that’s when the body was floating by the two fishermen as they recognized.”

Pierce said the medical examiner will perform an autopsy and use fingerprints and dental records to identify the victim. Anyone with information related to the case is asked to call 770-499-3945.

UPDATE: Cobb police have listed the victim's tattoos:

  • A devil and a panther on his upper arm.
  • "Latasha" on the back side of his upper left arm.
  • A Rottweiler, a heart with a dagger and "Ralph" on his upper right arm.
  • African continent with a lion, elephant and female image inside of it on his upper left chest area.
  • A Greek/Egyptian goddess on his upper right chest, covering a “Toni” tattoo.
  • An outline of the USA with “916” and an image of a male in chains on his abdomen area.
  • A smiling clown, “CYA LATER”, and sad theatre mask, all on his back.

If the body is that decomposed, will they even be able to retrieve any fingerprints?
