Groundbreaking for new fire station scheduled

The groundbreaking ceremony will take place Wednesday, Feb. 15 at 4 p.m.

Thursday the city of Smyrna announced that it will hold a groundbreaking ceremony for Fire Station No. 5 Wednesday, Feb. 15 at 4 p.m.

Ron Fennel, Ward 7 city council member, said at the last council meeting that the structure should be completed by Labor Day. Catamount Constructors Inc. was awarded the construction manager at-risk contract to build the station in December. The terms of the contract require that the station be completed in 160 days weather permitting.

The $1.4 million project is being funded by a federal stimulus grant, but the city is contributing $354,4333 to the construction. Fire Station No. 5 will be constructed at 750 Cooper Lake Road near the intersection of Cooper Lake and East West Connector. Once completed it will serve Smyrna’s southwestern residents. This will reduce response time to an area where residents sometimes have to wait 14 minutes for emergency service, said Smyrna Deputy Fire Chief Roy Acree.
