Lawrenceville Man Killed in Cobb Wreck on I-20

Fifty-one-year-old driver was ejected from his vehicle just east of Factory Shoals Road late Saturday night.

According to Cobb police, a Lawrenceville man died Saturday night when he was ejected from his vehicle during an accident on I-20 just east of Factory Shoals Road.

Tommy L. Pierson, 51, was transported to Grady Memorial Hospital after the Austell area wreck, but died as a result of the injuries he received.

The crash took place shortly before 10:15 p.m. and resulted in Pierson’s 1994 Explorer flipping end over end and coming to a final rest on its roof against the concrete jersey wall.

According to investigators, Pierson was traveling eastbound on I-20 in the left most travel lane and for reasons unknown, crossed into a neighboring lane and his vehicle struck a 2006 International tractor truck.

The collision caused Pierson to lose control of his Explorer, sending it into a spin, before it went airborne.

The driver of the International truck has been identified as 23-year-old James R. Carver of Marietta, who also had a passenger, 29-year-old Richard N. Malphurs of Marietta. Neither sustained any injuries in the collision.

The accident remains under investigation and no charges will be filed when the investigation is completed according to police.
