Motorcyclist Dies After I-75 Police Chase

Cobb police identify man killed in crash near Windy Hill Road.

A Chatsworth man was killed in an accident on a Windy Hill Road exit ramp near Interstate 75 early Tuesday after leading Cobb police on a high-speed pursuit.

Cobb police spokesman Sgt. Dana Pierce said Ramon Mares, 30, of Chatsworth was pronounced dead at the scene near the I-75 southbound ramp onto Windy Hill Road after suffering injuries in the crash.

Pierce said a Cobb police morning watch officer was trying to make a traffic stop on a 1991 Suzuki G.S.X.R.-1000 traveling southbound on I-75 near Barrett Parkway. The rider, whom police suspected of being an impaired driver, didn't stop and instead continued down the interstate, traveling at speeds in excess of 120 mph.

Pierce said the driver, later identified as Mares, apparently attempted to pull off at the Windy Hill exit ramp. Officers discovered the wrecked motorcycle and Mares' remains 100 yards from I-75 while setting up a perimeter to find him, Pierce said.
