Residents upset over idea of repaying stolen rent money

Several local public safety personnel are among the 18 finalists for the Cobb Chamber of Commerce's Public Safety Employee of the Year award.

The finalists came from nominations from residents, government officials, local agencies and community leaders and the winner will be announced during an Oct. 3 ceremony at the .

Elsewhere, according to a report from Channel 2 Action News, several residents at the apartment complex in Smyrna are upset after their rent payments were stolen from the leasing office and they are being asked to either pay again or recoup the money.

The television station reported residents learned from management that more than $10,000 worth of money orders and checks had been stolen from the complex drop box. 

A Smyrna-Vinings Patch email on Thursday to the complex management company Greystar inquiring if it would remain the resident’s responsibility to repay the rent if they could not recoup their funds via a fraud claim has not yet been returned.

Finally, a Smyrna man was arrested this week at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport for allegedly carrying a handgun while attempting to pass through security.

The AJC reported that Smyrna’s Rolando Buigas was accused of carrying a .40-caliber Glock handgun in his luggage. Bond was set at $5,000 for Buigas, who appeared before a Clayton County magistrate on Wednesday on a charge of carrying a weapon in an unauthorized location.

According to the story, civil penalties for carrying a firearm at an airport can “range from $3,000 to $7,500 for a loaded weapon and $1,500 to $3,000 for an unloaded weapon.’’
