Official groundbreaking of The Crossings at Four Corners set for next Tuesday.

Don’t forget a pair of scheduled events today and tonight at the Smyrna Community Center.

First, the Smyrna Business Association will hold its monthly luncheon beginning at 11:30 a.m. Dr. Tutterow, Professor of Economics at the Atlanta Campus of Mercer University and Chairman of the board of Vinings Bank, is scheduled to speak on the current economic, business and political climate. Then at 7 p.m., Cobb County lawmakers Rep. Stacey Evans and Sen. Doug Stoner are set to co-host a town hall meeting to give citizens the opportunity to voice their opinions. The pair will inform their constituents on the important issues being debated during the 2011 Session of the Georgia General Assembly.

  • Building demolishing has already begun for at the corner of South Cobb Dr. and Concord Road. But the official groundbreaking for what will be the second largest Kroger in the state of Georgia will take place on Tuesday, Feb. 8 from 10 a.m.-12 p.m.

Tri-Land Properties is developing this project that will be anchored by a 96,000 square foot Kroger, which will be the company’s largest store in the Atlanta market. In addition, The Crossings at Four Corners will include the installation of a traffic light at the north property line of the project and South Cobb Dr., the renovation of 60,000-square-feet of retail space and the development of eight outparcels available for lease or sale.

The project is slated for completion in January 2012. Expected to join Tri-Land and Kroger executives at the groundbreaking ceremony are Smyrna Mayor Max Bacon, City Council members Melleny Pritchett, Wade Lnenicka and Pete Wood and Cobb County Office of Economic Development Michael Hughes.

  • Meanwhile, according to City of Smyrna officials, about 20 residents remain at Hickory Lake Apartments. The Marietta Daily Journal reported today that the city has received 11 bids for demolishing the 48-acre apartment complex on Old Concord Road near Windy Hill.

The city in late 2010 and could possibly start demolition by next month or April. It plans to sell at least part of the site to a developer.

A variety of maps, plans and other project information will be available for review beginning at 6 p.m., followed by a brief presentation, including an overview of the project, and then an open house where participants can review the TOD plans and provide input to the design team.

  • Finally, a 20-year-old Smyrna man has been found guilty of murdering his 58-year-old godfather.

The Macon Telegraph reported that jurors deliberated for about an hour Wednesday before finding Justin Wingate guilty of murder and armed robbery in Michael Wilkins’ Jan. 23, 2010, shooting death. Sentencing is scheduled for today.
