Smyrna Police Officer, Fire Medics Up For Public Safety Awards

The awards will be given out at a Cobb Chamber of Commerce breakfast honoring the county's public safety professionals.

A corporal in the Smyrna Police Department and a Smyrna Fire Medic shift are two of 52 nominees for four awards being given by the Cobb Chamber of Commerce on Monday.

Corporal Darryl Nesbit and Smyrna Fire A Shift's Fire Medic 2 are eligible for public safety awards such as the Public Safety Employee of the Year Award, the Medal of Valor, the Award of Merit and the Distinguished Achievement Award.

The awards will be given out during the 19th Annual Public Safety Appreciation Breakfast at the Cobb Galleria Centre on Oct. 7. The breakfast will launch a week-long celebration and recognition of Cobb County's public safety professionals.

The featured speaker at the breakfast will be former UGA head football coach Vince Dooley.

Tickets for the event are $60, or $40 for Chamber members.

According to data retrieved by the Marietta Daily Journal from the 2010 census, Smyrna has 223 public safety employees, the fifth-most number of any organization in Cobb County.
