Smyrna Student Tries to Fight Teacher

The alleged incident took place at 10 a.m. April 25 at the H.A.V.E.N. Academy.

A student allegedly tried to fight his teacher at a Smyrna school that provides special education for students with severe emotional behavior disorders and autism.

The alleged incident took place at 10 a.m. April 25 at the H.A.V.E.N. Academy.

Hunter Oconnor of Austell is accused of removing his watch and cell phone, taking a fighting stance and telling the teacher to "come on," according to a Cobb County criminal warrant.

"The teacher refused saying, 'I don't want to fight you,' " according to the warrant. "The accused then pushed the teacher's desk out of the way and again taking a fighting stance began yelling and cussing at the teacher to come on."

Oconnor was arrested Friday on charges that include simple assault and disruption of public schools. He was booked into the Smyrna jail, but released early Sunday on a $5,000 bond.

My question is this: exactly what did the teacher do to set this kid off? Did the teacher follow the IEP for deesculating a situation with this kid? And for you in the public, did you know the school system actually teaches teachers how to set up a kid to be suspended or expelled? It's a fact, I observed it during a workshop several years ago at a CCPSD conference.

Hunter ...youngblood ...if you get yourself into trouble you're doing exactly what the teacher wants you to do. So, get with your parents/guardians and the school counselor--who actually does very little counseling as the counselor's main job is to test--and develop an Action Plan. In it you do this: 1. Accept verbal responsibility for your actions. You do this by saying you didn't do very well but you did the best you could ...otherwise you would have done better. 2. Write down what led up to this event. 3. Write down what could have been done to prevent this from happening. 4. Write down what can be done to prevent this from happening in the future. 5. Make a list of resources from which to draw from i.e. favorite teacher, PTSA contact, CCSD elected Board Member, State of Georgia Department of Education, US Department of Education, an aunt or uncle, siblings or cousins, etc ... . 6. Actualize this Action Plan with concrete details and examples. Anything less is setting you up for failure.
